Drury Lane Theatrical Productions Announces 2026 Young Artist Competition

Burlington, ON – Drury Lane Theatrical Productions is thrilled to announce the return of the Young Artist Competition for 2026, an inspiring celebration of youth talent and musical theatre excellence.

Open to non-union performers 18 years of age and under (as of May 1st, 2026), this competition gives aspiring young artists from Burlington and surrounding areas the opportunity to showcase their vocal talents. Winners in each age category can receive up to $200 in prize money and a chance to perform as a soloist at the prestigious Drury Lane Awards Gala on June 20th, 2026.

Eligibility & Categories:

Participants must perform a musical theatre song from a staged Broadway musical (songs from Disney movies are only accepted if included in a Broadway stage production). Costumes are encouraged but not required. Props must be minimal and managed by the performer.

Age Divisions (as of May 1, 2026)

● Junior Division: 11 years and under – $100 prize

● Intermediate Division: 12–15 years – $200 prize

● Senior Division: 16–18 years – $200 prize and solo performance at the Awards Gala

● Pre-Professional Showcase Category: All Ages - $200 scholarship for most promising

performer.

*Note: Any non - union performer who has worked on a professional stage can only submit to the Pre-Professional Showcase Category regardless of age.

● Top 20 Announcement: May 28th, 2026

● Young Artist Competition: June 6th, 2026 @ 7:00pm at Drury Lane Theatre

● Mandatory Technical Rehearsal: June 6th, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. *You will only be
required for a 30 min rehearsal/workshop during this time frame. All Top 20 finalists will receive valuable performance feedback and coaching during the day of the technical rehearsal before performing in the evening showcase adjudicated by a professional panel.

Step 2: Pay the non-refundable registration fee of $20 by visiting drurylane.ca

Performers may upload a video audition using either live accompaniment or a backing track (MP3/MP4). If selected for the Top 20, they may bring their accompanist or use their backing track at the live showcase.

About The Shows

Drury Lane is casting performers for two big musicals next season. For A Christmas Story, we will be looking for youth aged 8 to 17. Adults aged 18 and older are welcome to audition for both musicals.

A Christmas Story, The Musical (Fall 2026): Dive into the madcap world of Frankenstein’s grandson—sing, dance and play mad scientist in our hilarious take on the classic monster tale.

Little Women, The Broadway Musical (Spring 2027): Jazz-age romance, toe-tapping tunes and plenty of flappers—join us for this Gershwin-powered romp through Prohibition-era New York.

We welcome actors, singers and dancers of all levels and diverse backgrounds. All roles are volunteer/unpaid, but we guarantee a fun, supportive rehearsal process and a chance to shine on our mainstage. Performers must become members of Drury Lane Theatrical Productions.

Little Women – The Broadway Musical (May 2027)

Louisa May Alcott’s beloved story of the four March sisters, Meg, Jo, Amy and Beth, is now a magical musical spectacle where spirit, love, heartbreak, hope, and romance are backed with a powerful score.

After an extraordinary 47-year career, we extend our deepest gratitude and congratulations to Gary Smith on his retirement as Theatre and Dance Critic for The Hamilton Spectator.

For nearly five decades, Gary has been a steadfast champion of the performing arts in Hamilton, Burlington and across the region. His criticism was informed, incisive, and deeply rooted in a genuine love of theatre and dance. He documented our cultural evolution with integrity, context, and care — holding companies to high standards while celebrating the artistry that makes live performance essential.

Beyond his remarkable tenure as a critic, we are especially proud of Gary’s artistic contributions to Drury Lane Theatrical Productions. As a director, he brought clarity of vision, disciplined storytelling, and a profound respect for performers and audiences alike. His work on our stage reflected the same intelligence and theatrical literacy that defined his writing.

We also celebrate the extraordinary creative partnership between Willard Boudreau and Gary whose choreography for Drury Lane has energized our productions with precision, musicality, and dynamic staging. Together, Gary and Willard elevated our work artistically and set a standard of excellence that continues to influence our company.

Gary’s legacy is not measured only in column inches, but in the generations of artists, audiences, and arts organizations he has impacted. Burlington’s cultural landscape is richer because of his voice, his advocacy, and his artistry.

Call for Music Hall “Book/Libretto” submissions, for the 46th Annual Drury Lane Music Hall! (Winter 2027)

Are you interested in being the visionary behind next year’s Music Hall? Have you got amazing ideas for wonderful music, skits and dance numbers? Have you compiled and carefully curated your choices into a framework of a fabulous Music Hall show? Now is your time to share your concept with the Artistic Director and the Chair of the Reading Committee.

There are always some “givens” for our traditional winter show: medleys that flow, some comedy skits, a showcase piece for the men and the women in the show, and maintaining some “must have’s” such as a Pearlies Medley, and the audience favourite with your new twist on - If I Were Not Upon The Stage !! Other possible traditions include the opportunities for solos, duets, trios, or quartets/small groups - if it supports your theme. Tying the numbers together in a theme elevates the show above just being a variety show. We will expect a Sub-Title that describes your theme (for example this year’s show was the 45th Annual Music Hall - Everything Old Is New Again).

If selected, your “Libretto” becomes an approved book show consisting of two Acts of about 45 minutes in length each. This allows time for our Chairman to deliver introductions, and tell their jokes yielding a show with a running time of 2 hours plus intermission. Your approved Libretto is presented to the Stage/Music Directors, and they will use your show in its entirety.

When Directors are hired to stage a show, they bring their own vision and ideas based on a “script” so there will need to be some consultation with you very early in the process to agree upon requests for modifications to the show. Indicate beside each number in the running order, that you are 1) open to all director ideas, 2) have a few suggestions, but still leave it open to Director interpretation, or 3) where you have specific “non-negotiable” instructions for music and staging.

In your submission please include audio/video files, so that we have a good understanding of the music you are including. If you have videos of your skits - please include links for us to watch (and be prepared to write out a transcription of the video for a script if your book is chosen). For the “Upon the Stage” number, please describe the “characters”, and what they will be saying.

We will be reviewing all submissions, and then short-listing all submissions to the 3 top choices for consideration and final selection by the Drury Lane Board of Executives. If short-listed, you will be invited to make a presentation for the selection committee. Further details on what should be in your final presentation (format, presentation styles, time limits, etc) will be provided. In person presentations will take place late March or early April. Dates TBD.

What is your “sizzle”? How will you engage, surprise and delight your audience? How will you find the perfect blend of traditional with new content? How will you inspire our patrons to claim, “This is the best Music Hall ever!” Taking Music Hall to the next level. This is your chance to pitch your show!!!

who enters a contest to write a summer play - and wins!

This changes everything in his life. Putting on the play takes a large part of the story.

About the Author, Reg Gilmore

I volunteered at Drury Lane for ten years, 1995 to 2005. I think I worked on about 30 shows painting sets and designing a few as well.

That's where I met Louise - wow, 30 years ago. We worked on painting together and produced My Fair Lady in 2002.

Louise and I have been writing for many years, and have self published short stories and poetry on Amazon.com.

Postman Delivers is my first novel.

CALL FOR PRODUCERS and STAGE MANAGERS - 2026-2027 SEASON

PRODUCERS:

We are currently seeking individuals to take on the most important responsibility of becoming PRODUCERS for next season’s shows. Our line-up next year is: A Christmas Story (Fall 2026), 46th Annual Music Hall (Winter 2027), and Little Women (Spring 2027).

Qualifications :

Our Producers must be Drury Lane Members (non-members may apply, but must become members prior to beginning their work) who have lots of enthusiasm for building a wonderful Creative Production Team!!! You are prepared to work in a team of 2-3 Co-Producers. Your role starts prior to Auditions, getting things organized and then you steer the Ship up to Opening Night!

Your project management skills as Producer include planning and goal setting, co- creating a master production timeline, rehearsal and technical schedules, working alongside the Artistic Director, Technical Director, and Stage and Music Directors to establish resource breakdown, and personnel assignments, holding consistent production meetings, organizational skills using effective tools to share schedules and updates (e.g. Google Drive), managing the budget provided and excellent communication skills.

Responsible to the Artistic Director, you are the main liaison to the Board of Directors for DLTP. You will be required to give regular reports to the Artistic Director throughout the Production Schedule. You maintain the “big picture” view of the production. Interested but no experience? No problem! You will receive training and support from The Artistic Director.

STAGE MANAGERS

We are currently seeking individuals who have the desire to take on the important role of STAGE MANAGER for each of the Main Shows of our 2026-2027 Season. Our line-up next year is: A Christmas Story (Fall 2026), 46th Annual Music Hall (Winter 2027), and Little Women (Spring 2027).

Qualifications

Stage managers facilitate communication across all creative and technical departments; communicate regularly with the Co-Producers, act as a right hand to the director; oversee sets, props, lights, and sound; and call all technical cues during performances.

Rehearsal and Production: Stage managers schedule and run rehearsals, where they also:

● Record the director's decisions about blocking and notes for the actors;

● Convey the director's wishes to designers and stage crew;

● Create the prompt book (a.k.a. "the bible")—a thick binder containing the production's sound, lighting, and set cues, as well as other vital information. Pre-Show and Performance/post production: Once a show has opened, the stage manager is in charge of overseeing the integrity of the performance, including:

● Supervising preshow activities such as technical and safety checks;

● Running the performers through warm-ups and notes;

● Ensuring that everyone is ready for their entrances, and that the “house” is ready

● Calling technical cues to the crew over headset.

● Working with the Producers and Technical Director for the post show strike. Interested but no experience? No problem! You will receive training and support from experienced Stage Managers.

Cast Announcement: "Nice Work If You Can Get It"

Nice Work If You Can Get It ... is a new take on the 1920s musical farce featuring the iconic music of George and Ira Gershwin.

The show has won multiple Tony Awards and Drama Desk Awards.

Billie Bendix, a tough-as-nails bootlegger, and wealthy playboy Jimmy Winter, meet on the weekend of his impending wedding. Needing somewhere to stash 400 bottles of gin, Billie swipes Jimmy’s wallet and hides her stash in his empty Long Island beach house. However, when the wedding party arrives at the beach house, the bootleggers must juggle the guests and their business. Nice Work If You Can Get It is a definite crowd-pleaser that will have audiences singing along in the aisles.

In Memory of Heather Bridge

On Monday, September 1, 2025, Drury Lane lost another strong member. Heather passed away after a long 2-year battle of cancer. Heather not only leaves behind a loving mother, husband and family of 6 children with 7 grandchildren, but also her theatrical family. She leaves behind hundreds of friends from Mississauga Players, Theatre Etobicoke, TAPCT (The Absolute Port

Credit Troupers), NOMADS and Drury Lane. Heather’s physical and emotional love was shared with hundreds of people over the years and Drury Lane was blessed with this love over the past 8 years. This was shown when she won the award for best production of 2024-25. This was because she brought together a team of individuals who loved being together and made a production where everyone wanted to be there. That love and leadership will be hard to create again. She will not only be missed by her personal family, but also her theatrical family. We have not only lost a great person, but we have lost a valuable friend. She will be a part of all our lives forever.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Monday, October 13, 2025, at the Polish Banquet Hall, 2316 Fairview Street, Burlington, On L7R 2E4. Time: 11:00 am until 4:00 pm. Please come and share in this celebration - we look forward to seeing you. An annual tradition, a group from Drury Lane made their trip to Stratford to see a couple of musicals. This year we saw amazing performances of ANNIE, and DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS! Both were top notch productions from the acting, singing and dancing perspective, as well as the impact made by costumes, lighting, sounds.....and of course a real live dog on stage (Annie). Our treat this year was knowing someone in the cast of Annie! Addison Wagman, daughter of Drury Lane members and performers Michelle and Matt Wagman, is in the cast of ANNIE, playing one of the orphans (Tess). What a talent! And we were pleased when she came out after the show to meet us in the lobby with a fun set up for photos that included a cardboard dog!

Part of our annual Stratford trip includes an overnight stay at a lovely motel in Stratford (The Suburban), and a picnic. The picnic tradition has changed over the decades, but is still a highlight of the trip where we can sit outside, feast on a fabulous spread of food, and enjoy a relaxing time for conversation.

You have a new fan club, Addison! Keep your eyes out for Addison in the theatre scene; she is a rising star for sure!

The showstoppers you know: Musical revue ‘Finales’

A celebration of Broadway and local talent

When you come out to see a show like “Finales,” you support the performing arts in our community, and you buoy the dreams and spirits of the talented.

Finales are those big numbers that cap off a Broadway musical, or maybe send you out humming at intermission.

They’re showstoppers, staged to make you tingle.

Well, what if someone took a whole series of those big blockbusters and put them together in one show?

You’d have “Finales” of course, the musical entertainment City Centre Musical productions is bringing to The Loft at Drury Lane Theatre.

Put together by musical theatre director-choreographer Michael MacLennan, and musical director John Pugh, this eclectic entertainment brings the big eleven o’clock numbers from shows such as “Funny Girl,” “Next to Normal” and “Gypsy” together in one big evening.

“It’s a musical theatre revue that is a collection of the greatest endings to Act 1 or Act 2 from 26 different shows, both classic and contemporary. It’s a full evening of singing from 10 talented vocalists,” MacLennan says.

And when it comes to musicals MacLennan knows his stuff. He’s directed plenty of them for community theatre companies in the greater Hamilton and Toronto area.

Growing up in Hamilton’s east end, MacLennan had great imagination.

“Pretending to be someone else fascinated me as a kid. My elementary report cards all said, ‘Michael talks too much.’ I think it’s pretty clear that I needed to find a way of expressing myself.”

That’s where theatre came in.

“My drama teacher, Al Straitton at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School, was a huge inspiration. He saw something in me that I was probably not even aware of. This led to my first community theatre show with Hamilton Theatre Inc.

You could say community theatre was my training ground and from there I went on to study acting, singing and dancing.”

MacLennan performed at Stage West, Drayton Festival Theatre and Limelight Dinner Theatre, as well as singing in some big cruise ship shows.

“My dream came true when I was finally cast at the Stratford Festival and I did two wonderful seasons there. I was offered a third, but I made the difficult decision to decline this as I wanted to pursue other aspects of theatre, not just performing.”

MacLennan had always been intrigued by direction and choreography, and he became an assistant director at the Thousand Islands Playhouse and at Drayton Festival Theatres. Local audiences, however, probably know him best from the professional quality productions he has directed for Drury Lane Theatrical Productions in Burlington.

“I feel my organizational and multi-tasking skills, combined with my ability to communicate clearly, make me an effective director. People seem to really enjoy my process, and they trust me. I’ve had opportunities to be an assistant director and to choreograph for professional theatres, but it was community theatre companies that embraced me.”

MacLennan admits it’s hard to make a living from directing community theatre shows.

“Professional theatres put a show together in three weeks. Community theatres take about three months, so there needs to be some other source of income to survive. But isn’t surviving the plight of most theatre artists in this country?”

Still, MacLennan thinks young people interested in a theatre career shouldn’t be afraid to take a chance.

“I would never tell anyone not to follow their dream, but I would be very honest. There is a reason why it’s called show business. It is a business. And you have to pay as much attention to the second half of that title as the first. And you have to be courageous. You’ll be told no more than yes when it comes to getting a job.

“ Remember, you are the commodity you are selling, and it can be heartbreaking when you are rejected. If you have other skills you should foster them. They may come in handy during the lean times. And there will be many lean times. Most of all, be absolutely sure you love performing and can’t think of yourself doing anything else,” MacLennan says.

That’s what this talented showman has been doing for over 35 years, so he must be doing something right.

“I’m thankful for the folks who attend local theatres and come out to see productions like ‘Finales,’ ” he says.

“As a kid growing up in Hamilton from a steelworker’s family, going into theatre was not something I would call an obvious choice to make. Thankfully, community theatres helped me so much. They are so important because they do more than just put on shows. They provide a training ground for young artists, and they provide a safe space for people to embrace who they are. In more ways than one, they become a second family.”

MacLennan is right. When you come out to see a show like “Finales,” you support the performing arts in our community, and you buoy the dreams and spirits of the talented, enthusiastic folk who are on stage not because they’re paid, but because they love it.

D rury Lane’s regular season has now come to a close, culminating with A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, which many patrons claimed was one of the best shows Drury Lane has done. But another special feature presentation will be put on at Drury for two days only – Friday, June 13 and Saturday, June 14 – with both a matinee and evening performance on Saturday.

Finales consists of what it suggests: nothing but songs which were the finales (first or second act) of their Broadway shows.

Only some of the finale shows are traditional musicals, amongst them The Sound of Music (Climb Every Mountain), Camelot (Before I Gaze at You Again), Gypsy (Everything’s Coming up Roses), and Guys and Dolls (I’ve Never Been in Love Before). However, the shows for which you may not be familiar will make you want to see them, including shows like Shrek, The Witches of Eastwick, and The Notebook.

The concept for the show and its compilation is the brainchild of Michael MacLennan. If you have been to Drury Lane, then you have no doubt seen a Michael MacLennan show. There is always a precision and perfect organization to any show he directs. His resume is extensive, including as cast member in Mirvish shows and at the Stratford Festival, but also directing musicals in Burlington and Mississauga and beyond. In community theatre, his choreography and direction are highly respected, in some circles legendary. In short, he knows how to move actors about the stage to the best effect. For Finales, MacLennan writes a minimalist narration, giving just what we need to hear before getting to the songs themselves. The narration effectively defines ‘finale’ for us, then later suggests the themes we are about to hear, including songs of the heart and songs with different perspectives which challenge audiences.

Amongst the performers are some who may be familiar to Drury Lane audiences, most notably Alix Kingston, last seen at Drury starring in She Loves Me, Vincent Perri who performed in Drury’s Spelling Bee, and Doug Massey, who has been a regular fixture on Burlington and Hamilton stages for many years.

My wife and I were lucky enough to be invited to a rehearsal recently, several weeks before Finales was to be staged, and we were, quite frankly, blown away by the talent. Several performers have worked as actors commercially, but most would be considered amateur in their status, that is, not being members of ACTRA. But their talents are nothing short of professional. These are all performers who are very skilled indeed. They are able to control their voices like finely tuned instruments. One stand-out performer for me seems to be the youngest member of this ensemble, Nathon Irving, whose vocal control and range were awe-inspiring in all his numbers, but particularly in Who I’d Be from the musical Shrek.

Most remarkable, to me, was the incredible blends that Music Director John Pugh was able to glean from this extraordinary cast. During the chorus numbers in particular, and especially in the opening number from Pippin and the final finale from The Notebook, each voice was distinct and unique, and the co-mingling of voices made for a sound which was emotionally powerful.

MacLennan and Pugh are able to get their actors to also be emotionally affective. Their voices, along with the beauty of several songs, will reduce some audience members to tears.

MacLennan’s choreography consists of simple movements which reinforce the songs’ themes and support the emotional intent of each finale as well. The trio of Meagan Dowey, Alix Kingston and Misha Khorramshahi, with the assistance of simple choreography and wonderful voices, bring to life a finale from The Witches of Eastwick, one of many highlights from this show which will leave the audience breathless.

I wish I could mention all the performers, names noted in the picture, but I can assure you that they are all very talented singers and actors.

Actor and director Michael MacLennan’s working relationship with the Drury Lane Theatre has been long and productive. MacLennan, a versatile visionary and devotee of Canadian community theatre, has been involved in thirteen successful musicals at the Drury Lane theatre over the course of ten to twelve years. His first-ever collaboration with Drury Lane was The Secret Garden, based on the beloved novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, in 2008. In 2025, he was the director and choreographer of the wildly entertaining musical comedy A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, which premiered at the local theatre on May 9, 2025.

MacLennan is eager to share his aspirations for his upcoming show, for which he is the director and choreographer yet again, as well as the mastermind. This is the aptly-named and anticipated Finales, set to be performed at the Drury Lane Theatre in the month of June. MacLennan’s longtime love for Broadway theatre has inspired him to assemble a variety pack of what he considers to be the best final numbers in the musical show business. Theatregoers can look forward to favourite tunes such as “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” from Gypsy, “I’ve Never Been in Love Before” from Guys and Dolls, and “Don’t Rain on My Parade” from Funny Girl. Do you also like Chicago, Waitress, La Cage Aux Folles, and The Witches of Eastwick? They’ll be included too. The show will pay ample tribute to twenty-six different Broadway hit classics.

MacLennan has agreed to speak out on what he thinks is necessary for a musical show to end well, and why he is ending Drury Lane Theatre’s 2025 summer season in this way. Answers have been lightly edited for flow.

In your opinion, what makes a solid musical finale?

It’s something that will entice the audience to come back after intermission at the end of Act One. At the end of Act Two, it’s the way of wrapping up the entire story. I’ve always found finales intriguing because sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t, depending on the show. So I’ve always been sort of fascinated by them. That’s what gave me the idea of putting a show together that was strictly the finales of shows. Generally speaking, the finale is one of the more memorable numbers in the show. We have a lot of solos in our own shows. I think a lot of people don’t realize that many of the finales in a lot of shows are solos. I think everyone thinks they’re flashy, splashy dance numbers, but they’re not always so.

It was a lot of fun putting this production together and doing the research. I think I listened to about two hundred different finales in order to put this show together. You have to sort of mix it up between ballads, up-tempo, and solos. Duets and trios, too, things like that, to make it interesting. If it were all just one big splashy dance number after another, I think it would get a little bit boring for an audience. So I’m going for a more cohesive, complete evening.

What is your overall vision for your finale show?

To get it produced! That’s always a difficult thing when you’re putting together a show, you don’t know whether or not there’s going to be interest. I’ve been very lucky that two companies have been interested, so we’re going to two different theatres. The first is Drury Lane here in Burlington, and the second is the Maja Prentice Theatre in Mississauga. It was originally going to be only three performances in Mississauga, but then Rick Mackenzie from Drury Lane approached me. That was when a door opened up to go to another location.

Now people will see it, and some other theatre company might say, “Hey, I think that would work in our space, I would be more than happy to bring it here as well!” You just never know. You never know if it is going to have legs and continue on. It was the initial impetus for me to do a few shows, but if it goes to more than two locations, I would be very open to going to other theatres. It’s a perfect-sized show. It’s ten people and it can fit onto a lot of different stages.

Do you prefer a traditional theatre or a cabaret for staging a show?

I don’t have a preference. But one thing I like about Drury Lane is that it is a smaller space, and it forces you to be creative with your choreography. You also have to be creative with your sets. There are also the people. The people at Drury Lane are really kind, and the volunteers are so dedicated to that company. The people there really make it a home. It’s also a little easier to do because it is a smaller, more quaint space. But the people are dedicated to that. It’s been around for at least forty-five years. It’s a well-loved theatre in the Burlington area.

What future projects do you have in mind after Finales closes at Drury Lane Theatre?

I’m actually not returning to Drury Lane for their 2025/2026 season. I’m going to be doing the musical The Prom at two locations. I’m going to be in Georgetown with Georgetown Globe Productions this fall. I’m also going to be doing City Centre Musical Productions’ production of The Prom. It’s going to be a full year of The Pro

But, for now, it’s time to end with a bang. Finales is set to premiere at Drury Lane Theatre on June 13, 2025, at 8:00 p.m. On June 14, 2025, there will be a matinee show at 2:00 p.m. and an evening show at 8:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased here. 2025 Young Artists Competition

Open to non-union performers 19 years of age and under (as of May 1st, 2025), this competition gives aspiring young artists from Burlington and surrounding areas the opportunity to showcase their vocal talents. Winners in each age category can receive up to $200 in prize money and a chance to perform as a soloist at the prestigious Drury Lane Awards Gala on June 28th, 2025.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

• Participants must perform a musical theatre song from a staged Broadway musical (songs from Disney movies are only accepted if included in a Broadway stage production).

• Costumes are encouraged but not required.

• Props must be minimal and managed by the performer.

KEY DATES

• Application Deadline: May 23rd, 2025

• Top 20 Announcement: May 26th, 2025

• Young Artist Competition: June 7th, 2025 @ 7:00 pm at Drury Lane Theatre

Young Artist Competition

Drury Lane Theatrical Productions is excited to announce our 2024 Young Artist Competition. Drury Lane supports and encourages promising young artists from Burlington and surrounding areas by offering them the chance to win up to $300 per category and to perform as a soloist at our yearly Awards Gala in June.

Eligibility Requirements:

The competition is open to young singers who will perform a musical theatre song from a staged Broadway musical.

Applicants can be a maximum of 19 years of age as of May 1st, 2024. There is no minimum age requirement.

Only non-union performers may apply. (Actra and Equity card holders may not apply)

Age Categories (Age as of May 1st, 2024)

Junior Division: 11 years old and under

Intermediate Division: 12 - 15 years old

Senior Division: 16 - 19 years old

The 2024 competition will award:

A First Place Winner from the Senior Division, who will perform at Drury Lane Theatrical Productions as a soloist during the 2024 Awards Gala, receive a prize of $300 and be acknowledged on our website and social media.

A First Place Winner from the Intermediate Division, who will receive a prize of $300 and be acknowledged on our website and social media.

A First Place Winner from the Junior Division, who will receive a prize of $200 and be acknowledged on our website and social media.

Song Criteria:

Please ensure you have met the following conditions:

Choose one song to perform that is from a staged Broadway musical (this does not include songs from Disney Movies unless they also appear in a staged Broadway musical. Ex: The Lion King).

Please choose age appropriate material.

Do not include songs that have long dance breaks/instrumental sections

Accompaniment can be either live accompaniment or backing track.

Costumes are not required but encouraged. Props must be minimal and be carried on and off by the performer. The performer may use a chair/stool.

A First Place Winner from the Intermediate Division, who will receive a prize of $300 and be acknowledged on our website and social media.

The name of the competitor must appear in the comment/message section of the e-transfer so we can connect it to each performer.

How the Competition works:

Upload your video, fill out the registration form, pay the fee online via e-transfer.

All applicants who make the Top 20 will receive feedback on their performance & further coaching at the Technical Rehearsal.

The Top 20 candidates will be chosen to perform on June 8th at 7:00pm at Drury Lane Theatrical Productions. Tickets will be available for purchase for family and friends of the competitors at Drury Lane. The performer DOES NOT need a ticket to the event. They will sit with their family / friends until their performance.

The competition will host 3 adjudicators who will workshop each performance during the day at the technical rehearsal and then adjudicate the evening competition.

If you are selected as part of our Top 20, you can choose to bring an accompanist with you or provide the backing track in either an mp3 or mp4.

NOTE: All competitors who are chosen to perform in the Top 20 will need to attend a technical run-through at Drury Lane Theatre between 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. on June 8th, 2024. This will give performers the chance to get familiar with the space, run through their song and feel supported by their fellow singers!

Deadline for submission is May 22nd, 2024.

President's Message

With the month of May comes our last production – First Date. This means our season has almost come to an end, and what a magnificent season it has been. Thanks to you, our family, for making it successful again. Through the productions, our family has grown with new members. I love seeing the new faces both on stage and in the audience. This is how we continue to grow and become stronger.

Along with the end of the season comes the planning of the next, 50th Anniversary season. We will have a few new positions opening and will need to seek new volunteers on the Executive. Please reach out to the current Executive if you are interested in being a part of the team as a director or volunteer. We always need helping hands with costumes, props, sets, painting, marketing, or whatever your talents may be. Many hands make lighter work for all. Feel free to reach out to all who are on the Board.

Latest production sure to take audience back to their first date; shows are every May weekend

Dating. It’s pretty much a universal experience that provokes delicious, breathless anticipation and excitement while simultaneously invoking supreme anxiety and ultimate terror.

Starting on May 3 and running through to May 26 at Drury Lane Theatre, characters Aaron and Casey will be embarking on this ubiquitous of human experiences, the First Date.

Originally on Broadway in 2013, First Date takes the audience along to watch Aaron, a blind date rookie, and Casey, a serial dater, as they meet one another for the first time at Lucky Mae’s Restaurant. The show, as described by The Hollywood Reporter (on MTI’s website), is a “winning crowd-pleaser, delivered with comic verve and charm”.

Set in the present day, First Date portrays dating in today’s technologically-dependent environment, while exploring the timeless themes of love, hope, and the search for human connection.

Accompanied on the journey by an array of supporting characters representing Aaron and Casey’s family members and friends as well as the outrageous Restaurateur Lucky Mae, First Date delivers an evening of witty as well as heart-string tugging dialogue, interspersed with delightful and clever music and song.

As the final offering in Drury Lane’s 2023/24 Playbill, First Date welcomes back the perennial favourite Anne Barnshaw as Music Director and Marc Richard as Director, who is returning to Drury after many years in academia.

He remarked that First Date is built upon a universal theme in dating that we can all understand. “As time goes by there are things that change and things that don’t; like ‘will he like me?’, ‘is she the right one, the one?”

Katharine Costa, who is in the cast and also participated on the Drury Lane Reading Committee that chose First Date for the company said “this touching show is so relatable. Anyone, young or old, who has dated in this technological age has been through what Aaron and Casey are experiencing and will say ‘I did that’ or ‘that happened to me’ when trying to find your first person or the your next one.”

Richard said Drury Lane Theatre is the perfect venue to experience First Date because of the intimacy of the theatre. “You will feel like you are right there with them, experiencing this first date with this twosome, the trials and tribulations. Often the characters talk right to the audience.” Barnshaw agreed the audiences will enjoy the contemporary sound of the piece that is a mash up of different music styles. Richard said: “the music is current with a blend of pop and rock, but even showing some Broadway swagger.” The show has a “small but super talented cast that get to flex different parts of their musical chops”, offering songs that help “inform us where the characters have been and where they are going”, added Barnshaw.

Costa, who plays Woman #2, said “the songs are beautifully written and will no doubt be earworms for people.” Audiences are encouraged to take in this charming show during May. Costa assured that “the audience will leave laughing and smiling."

Richard concurred that First Date will provide an evening of entertainment with appealing universal themes. He likened the well-written comedy to some of the classic situation comedies such as The Carol Burnett Show or The Mary Tyler Moore Show. While poking fun at the mishaps and mistakes of a blind date, First Date offers a delightful glimpse into Aaron and Casey’s special night. We watch as they work through their insecurities and personality quirks, feeling vulnerable yet hopeful that true love is possible.

We are excited to announce our 2024 Young Artist Competition, happening on Saturday, June 8 ^th . Drury Lane supports and encourages promising young artists from Burlington and surrounding areas by offering them the chance to win up to $300 per category and to perform as a soloist at our yearly Awards Gala in June.

Thanks to everyone who attended the second games night! We enjoyed a beverage or 2 and some excellent conversation while playing Euchre. We will continue to meet the FIRST Monday of each month in the Loft when available or downstairs in the Green Room. This month’s date is May 6 at 7:00 pm until we leave. Bring your favourite game and we will decide which one or ones we play. Come for the competition or just come for the social and bring your friends. Let’s see where this leads. GAME ON!

Volunteer Spotlight: Jennifer McLennan

Jennifer McLennan is our current Volunteer & Membership Manager and a Member at Large on the Drury Lane Board of Directors. You may have recently seen her choreographic magic on stage during The Sound of Music, which was her Drury Lane debut.

Jennifer has been dancing since she was 3 years old and has always been moving, grooving, and creating in any way she can. Jennifer performed and competed internationally for nearly two decades and enjoyed sharing the stage with amazing performers and some became lifelong friends. As much as she loved being on stage, Jennifer knew her calling was behind the scenes creating and in arts education.

Jennifer has teaching certifications from the BATD in Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Step Dancing, Lyrical, Highland and Hip Hop. With over 25 years as a dance and musical theatre teacher, Jennifer works with the babies just learning to skip all the way up to the adults looking for some exercise and joy. Teaching is what she loves most - watching her students crush their goals and actually land a step they never thought they would really makes her heart happy.

Creating movement to tell a story is a lot of hard work, but when the performer you are working with brings your vision to life, it really is a magical moment. That is what keeps Jennifer coming back to the theatre space. Those Magical Moments.

After being a patron of Drury Lane for most of her adult life, she was influenced by her bestie Lauren to throw her hat in the ring as Choreographer for Sound of Music, then convinced her to join the board… and now she practically lives at the theatre!

When she isn’t at her day job working as Administrator for a Pediatrician's office, she is either at Shepherd Private Coaching, teaching some classes, or in her garden with her cat Mr. Darcy reading Jane Austen and drinking tea. Or, of course, you can see her running around at Drury Lane with the Front of House staff making sure everyone enjoys their evening at the theatre!

Drury Lane has been an incredible addition to Jennifer’s life and she will forever be grateful for the friendships it has created and the opportunities it has presented.

"Drury Lane Theatrical Productions Inc.

The Toronto based Tartan Terrors have performed throughout North America and on 4 continents and are one of the biggest Celtic acts around. They were formed by Ian Irmisch and his late sister Ellen and take their name from their childhood dance group: The Wee Tartan Terrors.

Although Ian and the band greatly miss his sister and co-founder, they took a great step to keep her memory alive by registering an official Tartan Terror Tartan. The group, consisting of various members, musicians and dancers blend high energy Celtic music, step dancing and comedy to provide a fantastic stage show that has left audiences around the world happy and full of craic. Just in time for Robbie Burns Day (weekend), they bring their energetic show to the Drury Lane Theatre in Burlington for 2 evening shows and a matinee."

In addition, a special treat will accompany the Terrors. Aspects of Dance Senior Highland Dancers will join the Terrors to push the energy through the roof!

ROLES:
Casey - (late 20s to late 30s) Female. Great belt/mix voice. Daring, bold and delightfully controversial. All as a defense mechanism.
Man #1 - (late 20s to late 30s) Male. Baritone/Tenor. (Jewish Chorus, Gabe, Edgy British Guy) Male, any ethnicity. Gabe is the womanizer and Aaron’s best friend since childhood. Edgy Rocker/British guy is a bad boy from Casey’s past.
Man #2 – (late 20s to late 30s) Male. Tenor. (Reggie, Aaron’s Future Son, Edgy Rocker Guy) Reggie is Casey’s fabulous fierce gay best friend. Edgy Rocker is a bad boy from Casey’s past. Aaron and Casey’s future son is confused over his religious affiliation and a rapper.

2024 Show Dates: Feb 23, 24, 25, Mar 1, 2, 3, March 8, 9, 10, Mar 14, 15, 16 and 17, with a tentative Charity Event Performance on March 7 (you must be available). Tech Week: February 18, 19, 20, 21, 22.

Rehearsals: Initially we will have Tuesday and Wednesday evening rehearsals November 14, 15, 21, 22, then switching to rehearsals on Tuesday and Friday evenings, and Sunday afternoons starting Nov. 28th. All evening rehearsals will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Sunday rehearsals are from 1 to 5 p.m. One rehearsal date will be scheduled between Christmas and New Year’: December 29 th . Successful applicants must be available for all rehearsal and show dates.

We are auditioning for Cast Members for the Ensemble of this exciting Musical Review. This year’s theme is “ No Tunes Like Show Tunes ” – with many selections sourced from the Broadway Stage, the Movies, and Television! See below for a brief outline of the Running Order for this year’s production.

Casting Needs

We will be casting 7-8 Female Presenting Performers and 7-8 Male Presenting Performers.

We will be looking for a balanced mix of Sopranos, Mezzo Sopranos, Altos, Tenors, Baritones and Basses.

Casting Criteria: Strong Vocal Skills and the ability to move well, and with a sense of Comedy and Fun!

All roles are NON-EQUITY and Non-Paying.

Please Note: The Role of this Year’s Chairperson has already been cast.

How to Register for your Audition

Send an email to Artistic Director, Carol Mackenzie ( cmackenz95@gmail.com ) to request an Audition Time. After registering, you will be emailed an Audition Form. Please complete it and return it to Carol! And that is it! Although in person Auditions are preferred, Video submissions will be accepted if you are not available on the 23 rd of September.

What to Prepare

Please prepare 2 songs of contrasting moods and styles that showcase your vocal range.

You may or may not be asked to sing both songs, and/or you may be asked to sing only a portion of your song(s).

Please bring the sheet music for your audition pieces placed in a binder for our accompanist. If you plan to use accompaniment tracks, you will need to bring your own device (e.g., Bluetooth speaker) to play your music. Accompaniment tracks must be instrumental only, with no choral tracks.

Individuals may also be asked to do some choreography during Dance Blocks that will be scheduled throughout the Audition Day, so please come prepared with appropriate footwear.

Drury Lane is a Volunteer Based Community Theatre. All performers will be expected to become a paid Member of Drury Lane Theatrical Productions.

Drury Lane is excited to announce Auditions for our fall show, SHE LOVES ME (Nov. 2022), and our winter show, 42nd Annual MUSIC HALL (Mar. 2023). Using Sign-Up Genius , you can select your date and time. You only need to sign up for one audition – even if you plan to audition for both shows! The Stage Directors, Music Directors, and Producers for both shows, along with DLTP’s Artistic Director will be your audition panel. Our Reopening Commitment – May 4, 2021

As Ontario remains under a province-wide emergency and Stay-at-Home order, we are forced to continue our delay for reopening of live musical theatre at Drury Lane Theatrical Productions. However, as the roll out of vaccinations continues, we are cautiously optimistic that we may be turning the corner and that planning for our reopening can now proceed in earnest.

Tentatively we have set a goal of reopening in early 2022 but have not dismissed the possibility of offering a late fall musical production. This of course would only proceed provided it is safe to do so and permitted by public health.

We want to thank our patrons, members, partners, actors, technical teams, and volunteers for their loyalty as we all pivot and adjust to ensure we can continue to bring you live musical theatre.

Remembering Our Beloved Jeanne Montague

It is with profound sadness that the family of Jeanne Montague announces her passing on November 11th, 2020. Jeanne contracted Covid-19 in early November and succumbed to the virus in the early morning of November 11th.

Jeanne Mawditt was born in Bristol, England, in August 1940. As an only child, she was a proper little shadow to her father, who was a Public Health Inspector. Bristol was heavily bombed during the war because of its proximity to a crucial local port and vital aircraft factory, both within 5 miles of the house. They spent the war under the stairs while air raids raged overhead. They even survived the house being strafed by a lone Nazi fighter.

Jeanne received a private education and trained to be a hairstylist at a fashionable salon in London, and then entered a family hairdressing business. She met Barrie Montague when he was a University of Bristol Mathematics student. She would watch him walk up the main street to the University from the salon window as she worked. It was love at first sight, and a romance flourished in the local Jazz scene. They married in 1963.

Barrie’s career took them throughout England and Wales. After having three sons, Barrie’s career took an exciting turn, and in 1970, having joined a multinational company he was offered an opportunity to transfer to Canada. An initial short-term contract quickly turned into a full-time position and the start of a lifelong move.

While raising three sons, Jeanne found the time to be an active member of the Burlington Jaycettes and volunteer at the boy’s schools. She remained a homemaker until the boys left home on their separate journeys. Never the one to sit idle, she looked for something new to do. Approached by a local needlework store, Jeanne started to work part-time. Her love of the craft made her believe that it was a paid hobby. She was a gifted seamstress, knitter, smocker; her talent was endless. There was nothing with thread or needle she could not accomplish or master in short order – her hands were rarely still. She sewed wedding dresses for friends, knitted for charity, and stitched Christmas stockings for family She loved to share her vast talent for cooking, such as her trifle, spinach dip, French onion soup, or her famous Christmas stuffing balls for her family and friends.

While at the shop, she was approached to become a volunteer at Drury Lane Theatrical Productions, a community theatre in Burlington. Which, after a short time, turned into the Wardrobe mistress’s position, which she retained to this day. It was a perfect match; she had been in love with theatre and ballet since she was a little girl.

Jeanne loved traveling. Barrie’s work in the trucking industry allowed them to travel across North America, seeing many exciting places and meeting many wonderful people. With relatives and childhood friends still living in the UK, there were many trips back to the UK. She never forgot her roots and loved her homeland. They enjoyed trips to her favourite cities, Paris and London, and the many ancient cities throughout central Europe. And there were never to be forgotten trips to South Africa and Tuscany with dear friends, and a wonderful 3-week experience in New Zealand.

She had an enormous circle of friends. Childhood playmates became lifelong friends, her co-workers became dearest companions, and neighbours became family. It is impossible to express how much all her friends meant to her.

Despite her small stature and gentle demeanour, Jeanne was an incredible force of immeasurable beauty and light. Always kind, compassionate, and accepting of everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her generosity was limitless, as was her passion for people and life. A hug from Jeanne was a true gift, genuine and full of love. Her smile could light up the darkest room and instantly made one feel warm and welcome. Her giggles were endearing, and her laughter infectious. Her wit, grace, and charm will remain in the hearts of those lives she touched, and her endless love and devotion and bright spirit will continue to dwell among us forever.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her father, Leslie, and her mother, Lilian. She is survived by her husband Barrie and their three sons Simon (Debbie), Nick (Corinne), and Andy (Liz). Jeanne had the joy of 8 grandchildren; Ashley (Travis), Brittany (Jared), Meagan (Adam), Kyle, Kaylee, and Kameron and Liz’s children Adam and Megan. One of her greatest pleasures was being Great-Grandma to Cooper, Noah, Beckett, Nixon, and Paislie.

She had a beautiful life and enjoyed every minute of it. A small funeral service was held on Thursday, December 3rd, at Burlington Memorial Gardens. Due to Covid-19, the ceremony was limited to immediate family only. A celebration for Jeanne will be planned in the new year when we can all gather and celebrate her life in a fashion that reflects her remarkable life and beautiful spirit.

A very warm hello to all from Drury Lane Theatrical Productions Inc!
We are excited to announce our audition call for Music Hall 2021! Show dates run from February 5, 2021, to March 7 ^th , 2021. Rehearsal dates will be 3 times per week this year: Tuesday and Wednesday evenings and Sundays (Sunday evenings in November, then Sunday afternoons starting in December). You must be available for all 3 days of week if cast in the show. We welcome anyone interested in being a part of our 2021 Production of “Music Hall” to participate in this audition call.

We are thrilled to share that our creative team includes Stage Direction by Lauren Shepherd, Music Direction by Donna Dunn-Albert, and Choreography by Katharine Mines-Costa.

COVID 19 impact on show : As of this date, we are assuming that we will still have a number of restrictions in place during the run of this performance, including: 50 seat houses, with social distancing and masks required for patrons, no bar service, cast members wearing masks during rehearsal AND during performances. This year’s edition will be staged differently to ensure social distancing for the actors on stage!

DATE of Auditions: November 7 ^th , between 12:30 and 5:00 p.m., being held In person, at The Loft. Email either of the producers to book your time. We are running on 14-minute intervals (e.g. 12:30 to 12:44, 12:45 to 12:49, 1:00 to 1:14, etc.) Further details are on the Audition Call notice.

IF you are unable to attend in person on this date, but you still wish to audition, you may send a video audition to the producers by 12 NOON on November 6 ^th . Contact the producers for further information about the process.

Drury Lane relies heavily on the hard work of an army of volunteers in order to bring live musical theatre to our community, but it also requires the support of our patrons to help keep the lights on. With the challenges of COVID, we need your support more than ever.

Drury Lane is a non-profit registered charity who wants nothing more than to breathe a little life back into the arts. Putting on high-quality shows requires countless hours from many of the cast and crew but it also requires funding for stage design, equipment, costumes and the overall upkeep of the theatre itself.

We have been incredibly lucky and we are thankful to all of our supporters. We hope we can keep this momentum going until we have reached our target of $10,000. Even if you aren’t able to support this cause, we’d love to see you in the audience.

Key components of the $35,000 required to produce Little Shop of Horrors with the high artistic integrity our audiences have come to expect are the “Audrey II Puppets”, costumes, scenery and lighting.

Drury Lane Theatrical Productions Inc., Burlington’s Premiere Musical Theatre Company is planning to produce and present Little Shop of Horrors in October/November 2020.

In these challenging times it is Drury Lane Theatrical Productions Inc. responsibility as artists and members of our community to seize the opportunity to rejuvenate our patrons, volunteers, partners and members with inspiring live musical theatre.

During the COVID crisis, we are encouraging our community to assist us in meeting this obligation of providing necessary live performance.

Of course, there are many variables to address during the COVID challenge. Provided we can gather in groups of 50 to 138 with the proper safety measures, our theatre (even at reduced capacity) is the perfect place to reintroduce live theatre. We endearingly refer to our theatre home as “The Loft”.

We are very excited to announce our first audition call for the upcoming 2020/2021 Performance Season! We warmly welcome anyone interested in being a part of our Fall 2020 Production of “Little Shop of Horrors” to participate in this audition call.

Given our current COVID situation Drury Lane will be conducting the first round of auditions virtually. Please find attached directions on what is required and how to participate.

We are thrilled to share that Director Michael MacLennan and Music Director Anne Barnshaw ( Legally Blonde and Spamalot were most recently brought to you by this fabulous duo) will be joining us again at Drury Lane for this amazing show! Deadline for submissions is June 19th, 2020.

Drury Lane Programming Changes: COVID-19

It is with regret that Drury Lane Theatrical Productions Inc. announces that it has cancelled our production of “ The Last Resort” which was due to open on May 8, 2020. However we are pleased to advise that this great musical will become part of our 2020-21 Season, being rescheduled for Apr/May 2021.

Although this is a challenging time for everyone, we look forward to being able to “raise the curtain” at Drury Lane and “lift our collective spirits”. We eagerly anticipate being able to entertain you this fall. We will start the season with Little Shop of Horrors opening October 30, 2020 followed by our 41st annual Music Hall opening February 7,2021. The Last Resort will re-emerge to close our season opening April 30,2021.

Please download our “2020-21 Season Playbill” and the order form from our website (drurylane.ca) in order to renew your Season Series (3 show) Subscription Tickets and receive preferential seating. Our preferential seating offer for renewals has an extended deadline of May 31st, 2020.

With respect to the value of the tickets you purchased for the cancelled run of “The Last Resort” we are offering three options to our patrons:

2020 / 2021 Season Announcement

This season of four brilliant musicals includes:
• Little Shop of Horror s – Book & lyrics by Howard Ashman and Music by Alan Menken. *
• Aladdin – The traditional pantomime favourite just in time for Christmas.
• Music Hall -The 41st annual music hall featuring some of the greatest highlights and a few cameos.*
• Spring Musical – The Countdown is on to announcing our spring musical.*
* Subscription Series includes Little Shop Horrors, 41st Annual Music Hall and The Spring Musical.

In Drury Lane’s upcoming season Little Shop of Horrors, 41st Music Hall and The Spring Musical evening
performances begin at 8 PM and matinees start at 2 PM. The Christmas pantomime, Aladdin evening
performances will begin at 7 PM and matinees will be scheduled for 2 PM.

Subscription renewal and new subscription sales go live March 1st, 2020, with renewal subscriptions
receiving preferential seat selection until April 30th. Individual ticket sales are scheduled to be on sale
May 1st. Gold Club Series go on sale March 1st also. (Request Rack Card for details).

As Drury Lane enters its 47 th year as Burlington’s premiere musical theatre company, Little Shop of Horrors offers music composed by Alan Menken in the style of early 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown that includes several well-known tunes, including the title song, “Skid Row (Downtown)”, “Somewhere That’s Green”, and “Suddenly, Seymour”. The musical premiered Off-Off-Broadway in 1982 before moving to the Orpheum Theatre Off-Broadway , where it had a five-year run. Add our signature 41 st Music Hall and a family classic musical, Spring 2021 Musical (licensed to Drury Lane with an advertising restriction until Nov 23 rd , 2020) rounding out the season and you can imagine a sense of comedy rock combined with a wonderfully endearing musical having a strangely gentle charm. Our Christmas pantomime, Aladdin an Aspects of Dance production in collaboration with Drury Lane brings families back to a tradition that forges childhood theatre memories for a lifetime. Enjoy!

I want to take this moment to reflect on the past few months! So much happened, to get us to this amazing place today! Great theatre is at the heart of all we do, and it could not have happened with out all the hard work from our Drury Lane community, Board Members, Volunteers, Actors, Crew, Creative Teams, Directors, and of course, our beloved audiences!

Throughout the year, so many talented people came out and rehearsed, directed, played in the band, built sets, had paint parties, designed and created costumes, put together and created fantastic props, helped backstage, ran lights and sound, organized front of house and welcomed our amazing audiences. Each year, on top of producing incredible theatre productions, we also host video nights, enjoy the Santa Clause Parade, go to Stratford, and celebrate all our accomplishments at an awards night, have our Annual General Meet- ing, have BBQ’s and perhaps enjoy a pint or two at our bar. This past year was no different – with the exception that we added a major renovation to give us our new Front Of House bar area, accessible washroom and production booth! Pretty incredible when you think about it! Without the help of our volunteers, we would not be where we are today – so THANK YOU!!!

2019/2020 Season looks to be another incredible year and with new board members to lead the way and after a successful renovation and fall show – I feel it’s going to be our best year yet!

Also a very special thank you to Rick MacKenzie for revamping the Libretto and taking us to the next level with it! Thank you all for your support and for loving Theatre!

The unsung heros of Drury Lane Theatre are our Volunteers. Drury Lane is Burlington’s premiere musical theatre company connecting with well over 10,000 people directly in any given year.

Our volunteers provide the glue that keeps all the various parts of our theatre company alive and well, whether it’s creatively, stag- ing, front of house, production, social or helping us bring patrons to the theatre. Each role is indispensable to creating that Magical Experience we all call “Musical Theatre”.

Renovations Phase 1 Complete!

Ask anyone connected to the highly successful Legally Blonde production and people will tell you we all had to “dig down deep” to attain this musical theatre metamorphosis, especially competing for space in the theatre as renovations were pushed back to overlap with rehearsals and tech week big time! Hats off to a brilliant and tenacious creative and producing team, not to mention the actors’ and the musicians’ tolerance for noise, dust and what may have seemed like chaos at times. You all shone through!

Well Let The Trumpets Sound …Right Here in River City…sorry, no that’s somewhere else! Why you ask? Its about our new BAR, (accessible) BATHROOM & (tech) BOOTH, HOUSE LIGHTING, STAGE LIGHTING, BODY MICROPHONES… It is glorious, convenient, spectacular and the beer still tastes great!

Yes Phase 1 of our renovation has made its debut at the Loft! And it’s spectacular. Drury Lane seems like it’s on a renaissance of sorts with our “New Digs” while staying on top artistically in selection, execution and presentation of musical theatre. And we are not done yet!

No organization can match the commitment of Drury Lane Volunteers. The demolition of the bar in June; demo of the theatre ceiling and wiring in November; the installation of a new stage lighting transformer, new stage lighting, new lighting console, house lighting and many projects too numerous to mention resulted from many long hours by electricians, programmers, sound technicians, Board of Directors members, Legally Blonde cast and crew who gave it their all.

Come see for yourself. This brilliant Cabaret Theatre venue makes Burlington’s Drury Lane Theatre the go to spot for musicals and variety musicals.
